Entry Requirements
The UK ETA: What You Need to Know
Starting in 2025, all travelers will need to complete a UK Electronic Travel Authorization, or ETA, before arrival.
This page shares everything you need to know about the ETA and how to complete the application, so you’re fully prepared for your expedition.
In addition, this video explains what the ETA is and offers a step-by-step guide on how to apply.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a digital entry permit required for travelers visiting or connecting through the UK. Modeled after the U.S. ESTA program, the UK ETA aims to streamline entry processes. Here’s what you need to know:
- Who needs it? All travelers entering or connecting through the UK, including those with flight layovers.
- How long does it last? The ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
- Cost: £10, or approximately $15 USD.
How Does the UK ETA Impact My Trip?
- All Travelers must complete a simple online form and pay a nominal fee before arriving in the UK.
- Don't Delay: Although your departure may be many months away, apply for your ETA at the first opportunity to ensure you're ready to go.
I'm going to Ireland. Do I really need this?
- H&B Strongly Recommends all travelers to obtain the UK ETA, even if your itinerary does not include the United Kingdom.
- Why? If an unexpected flight change or connection routes you through the UK, you'll be ready.
- Required for Northern Ireland: Heading to Royal Portrush or Royal County Down? You'll need the UK ETA.
- Future Proof Your Travel: Since the ETA is valid for multiple years, securing it now will ensure you're ready for any future travels, whether it's needed for this trip or not.
How Do I Apply?
- The best way to submit your application is via the ETA mobile app (Apple - Android). The app makes it easy to scan your passport and take a photo of yourself. As a last resort, you can also apply online here.
- What's Needed: Basic contact information, passport details, a photo of yourself, and answers to a few security questions.
- How Long: The application takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. Approval time is typically fast, usually within minutes to a few days.
- Who Checks: Your airline will confirm your ETA status before departure. Be on the lookout for instructions from your carrier.
What Should I Do Next?
- Apply Now: Even if your departure is many months away, it's one less thing to remember later.
- Check Your Passport: Ensure that your passport is up-to-date and valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
