5 Things to See Around Killarney National Park

Must-See Sightseeing in Southwest Ireland

3 Minute Read

Southwest Ireland is one of those places that kept me in awe when I first visited. It’s a reaction I often hear from our travelers, too. Sure, there are the world-class golf courses (six of the world’s top 100, to be exact), but the off-course adventures? Just as incredible. There’s so much to see that I had to split it into two posts.

In the first, I shared five of my favorite spots in Southwest Ireland. This time, we’re diving into one of Ireland’s crown jewels: Killarney National Park. Here are five experiences you absolutely can’t miss.

Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry is a must. Think charming little towns, lush valleys, and dramatic coastal views. One minute you’re driving through a quaint village, and the next, you’re staring at a panorama that looks straight out of a postcard. My tip? Start early to beat the tour buses and don’t rush. Some of the best memories come from those unplanned stops where you’re just taking it all in.

Ladies View

Ladies View is one of those spots where you just have to pause and soak it all in. The name comes from Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting, who visited back in 1861 and were just as enchanted as you’ll be. You’ll see the Upper Lake, Ireland’s highest peak, and the McGillycuddy Reeks mountains. On a clear day, the view goes on forever.

Muckross House

Muckross House is like stepping into a different era. Built in 1839, this grand estate is right on the shores of Muckross Lake and surrounded by gardens that are just as impressive as the house itself. For a unique experience, consider hopping on a jaunting car for a ride through the grounds. One traveler told me it felt like being on the set of Downton Abbey, and I’d say that’s pretty spot on––even if Downton was set in England.

Gap of Dunloe

The Gap of Dunloe is something else entirely. It’s this narrow, glacier-carved valley that you can explore by jaunting car and boat. The cliffs around you are towering, and the whole experience just feels… timeless. In a part of the world where the memorable sights can sometimes run together, this one is certain to stand out.

Ross Castle

Ross Castle is the kind of place that makes you stop and think about the stories its walls could tell. Built in the 15th century, it sits right on the shores of Lough Leane and was one of the last strongholds to surrender during the Irish Confederate Wars. Pro tip: Pair your visit with a boat ride on the lake. It’s the perfect way to balance a bit of history with the beautiful scenery.

Don't Miss Killarney Town

The town of Killarney is packed with shops, pubs, and restaurants—perfect for winding down after a day of exploring. I always tell travelers to spend an evening here soaking up the lively atmosphere and enjoying some local hospitality. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself swapping stories with fellow adventurers over a pint.

From the iconic Ring of Kerry to the magical Gap of Dunloe, the area around Killarney National Park is one of those places that sticks with you. Whether you’re a golfer, a sightseer, or a little of both, this corner of Ireland has something for everyone. When you’re ready to start planning, I’ll make sure your trip is as unforgettable as the destination itself.
